Zephyring’s debut album now available through Grunge Pop Records.
Zephyring, an LA grunge band, has recently released their debut album, Detournement, under the Grunge Pop Records label. Produced by the renowned Steve Albini, known for his work with Nirvana, Pixies, and Fugazi, the album features a unique blend of raw and raucous punk rock tracks. One of the highlights of the album is the track ‘Jesus Was A Vegetarian’, where Albini contributes a commanding whistle, enhancing the song’s powerful message of sustainability with the chorus “meat is murder”.
Frontman and guitarist Taz poured his heart into the album, showcasing his life experiences with unfiltered honesty. In the track ‘Black And Blue’, Taz delves into his struggles with drug addiction, singing “I give my life to you, I cut my arms for you”. This song, born out of desperation and suicidal thoughts, reflects Taz’s internal battle with darkness. Despite the pain he endured, music became his lifeline to express his truth and experiences.
Zephyring aims to revive the raw energy of Seattle 90s grunge while infusing elements of punk, garage rock, and indie rock into their sound. The trio, consisting of Taz on vocals and guitar, Billy on bass, and Eric on drums, delivers a mix of distorted, four-chord epics reminiscent of bands like Nirvana and The Lemonheads. Detournement was recorded in just two days on analog tape with Steve Albini, resulting in dynamic pop songs with a hardcore edge and a gritty, live feel that captures the essence of the band’s music.
Taz expressed his gratitude for the recording experience with Albini, highlighting the magic of creating music together. Out of the 27 songs recorded, the band selected six tracks for their first EP titled ‘Hydraphantasy’, followed by their favorite ten songs for the ‘Detournement’ album. This selection represents the brightest gems of their musical journey, characterized by rawness, abrasiveness, and honesty, all imbued with Albini’s signature touch.
With the release of Detournement, Zephyring enters the music scene to reignite a passion for loud, distorted, underground rock in 2026. Their blend of grunge, punk, and indie rock, inspired by the sounds of the past while carving a new wave of music, promises a unique listening experience for fans of the genre. As the band continues to evolve and grow, their commitment to authenticity and storytelling through music remains at the core of their artistic expression.
