Wife of Nation of Islam leader, Khadijah Farrakhan, passes away at age 90

The passing of Khadijah Farrakhan, known as the ‘first lady of Nation of Islam’ as the wife of the famous leader Louis Farrakhan, has left a significant impact on the community. She was a stalwart figure in the religious and sociopolitical movement that advocated for Black self-reliance.

Khadijah, affectionately known as “Mother Khadijah,” had been an integral part of the Nation of Islam for many years, standing side by side with her husband in their efforts to lead and empower their followers. The couple’s home base was Mosque Maryam in Chicago, a place where they dedicated their lives to advancing their beliefs and principles.

The news of Khadijah’s passing was announced by the Shura Executive Council, with a message from Louis Farrakhan expressing deep sadness and gratitude towards Allah for the life of his beloved wife. She had been married to Louis Farrakhan for an impressive 72 years and played a crucial role in shaping the direction of the Nation of Islam.

Her death came just months after her 90th birthday, a milestone that was celebrated by devotees. With funeral services yet to be announced, the community is mourning the loss of a devoted follower and a beloved soul. Tributes have poured in from all corners, with many remembering Khadijah as a beacon of strength, faith, and grace.

Born as Betsy Ross, Khadijah Farrakhan tied the knot with Louis Walcott in 1953 in Boston. The couple went on to have nine children, with their oldest son, Louis Farrakhan Jr., passing away in 2018 and son Joshua Farrakhan in 2023. Khadijah converted to Islam in 1955, around the same time her husband joined the Nation of Islam after being influenced by Malcolm X.

Louis Farrakhan’s rise to leadership in the organization after the tragic assassination of Malcolm X marked a turning point in the movement. One of his notable achievements was organizing the Million Man March in Washington in 1995, a historic event that aimed to unite and empower African American men.

Khadijah Farrakhan also had her moment in the spotlight, addressing a gathering of Black women at the Million Woman March in Philadelphia two years later. Her powerful words resonated with the audience, emphasizing the importance of unity and collective progress for the community.
