GYOZA’s new album “Beber y soltar” explores the two sides of grief
Gyoza’s latest work, “Beber y soltar,” marks a departure from their usual sound while still retaining a sense of familiarity. The Barcelona-based band, formed in 2015, consists of Adrià Marva, Xavi Montferrer, Marina Berlanga, and Alex Fernández-Cardellach. Their music blends elements of alternative rock, indie, and experimentation, characterized by Adrià’s distinctive voice and progressive melodies.
The band’s new EP encompasses two interconnected releases, “Beber y doler” and “Beber y soltar,” presented together in a vinyl format. These works form a cohesive narrative that delves into the weight of grief without seeking resolution. The fusion of both EPs underlines the band’s desire to create a unified experience rather than self-contained chapters.
“Beber y doler” and “Beber y soltar” feature collaborations with various musicians, including Isaac Valdés and Violeta Mosquera. Adrià took on production, recording, and mixing duties at Cal Pau Recordings and Bandicoot Records, with additional recording by Jose González and mastering by Victor Garcia. The EP’s visual elements were carefully curated, with photography by David Rico, Marina, and Andrea, alongside artwork by Guillem Martín.
The concept behind the EPs emerged organically from the band’s discussions on grief and the inevitability of its presence in life. Rather than viewing grief as something to overcome, Gyoza embraced the idea of acknowledging and integrating it into their creative process. “Beber y soltar” encapsulates this philosophy, emphasizing acceptance rather than closure in its exploration of grief’s enduring presence.
The title of the EP signifies a sense of release, not in the sense of letting go completely but in understanding the permanence of certain emotions. The decision to combine both releases into a single vinyl was a deliberate choice to maintain continuity while allowing each EP to exist independently. Collaborating with Guillem Martín on the visual aspects of “Beber y soltar” was essential to ensure a seamless transition from “Beber y doler.”
