New international screamo split features raw emotions from ангст., L’Idylle, and Misericorde
In early January, the drummer of the Russian band, ангст., Dmitry Petrenko, initiated contact with the French screamo group, L’Idylle, through Instagram. He simply wanted to express his admiration for their music, with no collaborative plans in mind. However, this interaction led to the creation of a new international split release titled “мизерикорд // отрава”, featuring ангст., Misericorde, and L’Idylle, spanning two countries.
The collaboration between the bands was born out of casual dialogue and organic connections. According to ангст., the idea of a split release emerged spontaneously during their interactions with L’Idylle. Initially planning for three tracks, L’Idylle proposed a collaborative song instead, solidifying the bond between the bands. The creation of their track, “отрава”, underwent multiple transformations during the writing process, resulting in a more aggressive composition reminiscent of early post-hardcore music.
Despite the geographical separation between the bands, the recording process was a collaborative effort conducted between different cities. ангст. members recorded their parts in various locations, combining efforts through digital means to finalize the track. Translating L’Idylle’s lyrics from French was a crucial element in shaping the song, facilitated by a member of the Russian band Север. The decision to maintain the French lyrics was a deliberate choice by L’Idylle to preserve their native language while harmonizing with the Russian vocals.
The split represents a fusion of musical styles and cultural influences, embodying a spirit of collaboration across borders. L’Idylle’s involvement was driven by a mutual respect for Russian screamo and a desire to explore new territories within the genre. The bands’ shared passion for music and cultural exchange laid the foundation for this unique project.
The track “мизерикорд” by Misericorde, included in the release, stemmed from a longstanding relationship with ангст. The bands’ similar artistic vision and shared experiences within the music scene led to the creation of this split release. Through their shared commitment to the project, the bands transcended language barriers and geographical distances to produce a cohesive musical endeavor.
The split release serves as a testament to the global resurgence of screamo, emo, hardcore, and other heavy music genres in the Russian music scene. The active participation of enthusiasts, the emergence of new bands, and the vibrant atmosphere at live shows underscore the thriving environment for alternative music in Russia. Acknowledging the contributions of fellow bands and the support from the record label further highlights the interconnectedness and collaborative spirit within the music community.
For L’Idylle, the split release represents not only a musical endeavor but also a political statement. By incorporating diverse languages and cultural influences into their music, the band emphasizes the power of coexistence and mutual understanding through artistic expression. The split release stands as a symbol of unity and creativity, transcending boundaries and creating connections between artists from different corners of the world.
