Mr. Phylzzz, a Chicago noise-rock duo, recently released a new track called “Over and Over Again,” which is a reflection on the theme of repetition. The song, which is part of their upcoming album “Fear the Lord,” was recorded at Electrical Audio in Chicago and accompanied by a video shot in their practice space. The duo, consisting of Danny and Clinton, has a history of opening for major venues in Chicago, such as Metro, Thalia Hall, Sleeping Village, and Schubas, and are now headlining shows at the Empty Bottle.

Their next big performance is not just a homecoming but a live album recording at the Empty Bottle in July. In addition to their solo shows, Mr. Phylzzz will be supporting the Melvins at two dates in Kansas City and St. Louis. The track “Over and Over Again” explores the themes of self-imprisonment and the destructive nature of repeating stagnant cycles. Clinton, one of the duo’s members, explains that the song delves into the idea of staying stuck in patterns that lead to nowhere, suppressing one’s potential for the sake of safety.

The lyrics of the song reflect a sense of trying to break free from repetitive cycles but failing to do so intentionally. With lines like “Called a sparrow a sheep so it would never fly,” the song serves as a metaphor for the suppression of natural potential. Danny, the other member of Mr. Phylzzz, describes the track as having an energy that reflects the overall vibe of the upcoming album, which features moments of intense riff-driven sections interspersed with open verses and chaotic outros.

The video for “Over and Over Again” was shot in the duo’s practice space, emphasizing the idea of self-imprisonment and repetition within the confines of a room. Clinton sees the track as a warning against falling into comfortable yet unhealthy patterns, stating that just because something feels safe does not mean it is beneficial. The duo aims to challenge themselves creatively with their new album, breaking free from genre constraints and exploring new sounds and styles.

Mr. Phylzzz has previously toured extensively, including a major national support tour with the Melvins and Boris in 2023. The upcoming July run builds on this experience, with the duo adding dates around their support shows with the Melvins to further expand their reach. Despite the challenges of touring and the unpredictable nature of live performances, the duo finds solace in the chaos and routine of life on the road, where every day presents a new obstacle to overcome. Despite the potential for panic, they thrive in the chaos and find a sense of calm within the madness.
