Summer travel demand increases as fuel surcharges decrease

As the summer vacation season approaches, there has been a noticeable increase in travel demand. Analyzing accommodation reservation data from July 1 to August 31 compared to the same period last year shows a significant 68% increase in reservations for accommodations in Korea. This surge in bookings is not limited to traditional lodging options, as reservations for camping, caravan, and glamping experiences have doubled, showing a 102% increase. The allure of nature-based recreational activities seems to be a major draw for travelers this summer.

When looking at the regional distribution of these reservations, Gangwon Province emerged as a popular choice, with 23% of bookings being made for this region. Following close behind are Jeju Special Self-Governing Province at 11% and Busan Metropolitan City at 9%. Gangwon Province, in particular, has seen widespread popularity in various areas, such as Samcheok, the East Sea, and Hongcheon. This diversified interest indicates a growing trend of travelers exploring multiple parts of the province.

In terms of international travel, Japan continues to be a favored destination among travelers, with 35% of international flight reservations being made for this country. Vietnam follows in second place with 21% of bookings, while Indonesia, specifically Bali, has seen a surge in demand, securing its spot in the top three with 5% of reservations. Noteworthy attractions in Japan, such as Sapporo BA and Furano bus tours, as well as Universal Studios Japan, have garnered significant interest among tourists.

Despite the ongoing pandemic, interest in performances and exhibitions remains high, reflecting a shift towards consumption of cultural experiences. Children’s shows like “The 100-story House in the Forest” and “The Little Mermaid” are popular choices in the musical and dance categories, respectively. “Psy Soak Show Busan” tops the list in the concert category, catering to diverse entertainment preferences.

With domestic travel gaining momentum, South Korea continues to be a sought-after destination among global travelers. Seoul, in particular, has seen a 63% increase in flight bookings compared to last year, establishing itself as a prominent global hub for tourism. Other East Asian cities, such as Busan, have also experienced significant growth, showcasing the country’s appeal as a multifaceted travel destination.

The rise in tourism is not limited to conventional sightseeing but extends to cultural events like music festivals. ‘Water Bomb Seoul 2026’ and ‘Water Bomb Busan 2026’ are among the top picks for overseas travelers, highlighting the popularity of K-pop and music festivals. Moreover, summer bookings in Seoul have surged, emphasizing the city’s appeal as a vibrant cultural hotspot.

With an array of options ranging from accommodations to performances and exhibitions, travelers have a wealth of choices to explore and enjoy during this summer season.
