Platner urged to drop out as new allegations surface in Maine Senate race
The recent emergence of new allegations against Democratic Senate candidate Graham Platner has thrown his campaign into turmoil, sparking a debate about the necessity of finding a replacement nominee for a crucial U.S. Senate race in Maine.
Following his securement of the Democratic nomination for Senate in Maine, Platner now finds himself embroiled in a scandal involving serious accusations. Jenny Racicot has come forward, alleging that Platner had raped her in 2021. In response to direct questioning from CNN’s Jake Tapper, Racicot unequivocally answered that Platner had raped her. However, Platner vehemently denied these allegations, asserting that any accusations of nonconsensual behavior are entirely false.
The Maine military veteran and oyster farmer, who initially garnered support as his campaign gained momentum, has been shadowed by controversy. Previously, he had issued an apology for having a Nazi tattoo, which he later had covered up. In addition, inflammatory social media posts that he made about women and police prior to his foray into politics have also caused a stir.
Platner had been seen as the Democrats’ strongest contender to take on incumbent Republican Senator Susan Collins, with the potential to flip the Maine Senate seat and aid in regaining control of the chamber. However, after these latest allegations, numerous prominent Democrats, including Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, have withdrawn their support. Calls for Platner to step down have been resounding within the Democratic Party, with Sen. Jeanne Shaheen stating that he should exit the race as soon as possible.
While there is still a window of opportunity for Maine Democrats to find an alternative nominee, state law stipulates that the party must select a replacement for Platner by July 27 if he opts to withdraw by the following week. Notably, Senator Bernie Sanders, who had previously supported Platner, has also called for him to step aside in light of the recent developments.
Overall, these new allegations have thrown a curveball into the Maine Senate race and may lead to significant repercussions for the Democratic Party as they navigate the path forward in this pivotal contest.
