In their latest musical endeavor titled “Alien Metal,” King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard embarked on a groundbreaking journey into the realm of electronic dance music. The inception of this project can be traced back to their Eurorack modular synthesizer setup, affectionately named Nathan. Joey Walker, recognized as the group’s techno enthusiast, proposed the idea to bandmate Stu Mackenzie, who eagerly embraced the concept with open arms. Mackenzie boldly declared his intention to unlearn everything he knew about music and start afresh.
The band took Nathan on a tour that not only showcased their traditional instruments but also allowed each member to experiment with the modular setup in their unique way. What began as a mere experiment soon evolved into a fervent passion for the Melbourne six-piece artists. The creation of “Alien Metal” was no easy feat, as it demanded years of exploration, creative detours, and the abandonment of entire musical directions. A pivotal moment came during a spontaneous late-night improvisation session that extended over an hour, serving as the catalyst for every track on the resulting album.
The musical landscape of “Alien Metal” is a diverse amalgamation of techno, hardcore, house, and jungle influences, all filtered through the distinct psychedelic lens of King Gizzard. Though the album delves into intense sonic territories, it also navigates through intricate and compelling musical landscapes. As Mackenzie aptly describes it, “It sounds so crunchy, but also beautiful.”
This venture marks the band’s twenty-eighth album, a testament to their unyielding creativity and unwavering commitment to musical exploration. Following the electronic experimentation of their previous release, “The Silver Cord,” King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard are set to grace the Forest Hills Stadium in New York for a three-night event in August. Their schedule also includes a sold-out return of the Field of Vision Festival in Colorado and a rave show at Under the K Bridge Park in Brooklyn.
