Oxford singer-songwriter Willie J Healey has recently revealed his upcoming EP titled 143, scheduled to be released on September 4th. Along with this exciting announcement comes the release of the EP’s lead single, Ditch, a delightful track that showcases Healey’s unique blend of vintage charm and personal storytelling. This five-track collection follows the success of his acclaimed Bunny album from 2023 and precedes his upcoming appearances at various UK festivals and intimate headline shows, solidifying his position as one of Britain’s most exceptional and subtly brilliant artists.

Ditch, the opening track of the EP, is a delightful piece of hazy indie rock that perfectly encapsulates Healey’s ability to merge classic warmth with intimate storytelling. The song emanates a nostalgic yet fresh vibe, characterized by its loose, sun-soaked instrumentation and Healey’s laid-back vocal style. Healey himself describes Ditch as a gift that came to him effortlessly, a reflection on old-world sensibilities, youthful fear, and classic love stories like Romeo and Juliet.

The EP features recordings that span different environments, with some tracks completely captured on Healey’s four-track recorder at home, while others were a result of his collaboration with producer Loren Humphrey in New York, continuing their creative partnership that began with Bunny. Rather than striving for perfection in sound quality, Healey allows the contrasts between these recording sessions to shine through, presenting the songs exactly as they were created. The diverse nature of the recordings on the EP contributes to its unique charm and character.

Healey explains the origins of the EP’s title 143, revealing that a friend once sent him a message using that code, which translates to “I love you.” Healey found this subtle expression of affection fitting for the record, avoiding overly sentimental or soppy themes. The songs on 143 are intentionally uncomplicated, aiming to convey their messages directly without unnecessary embellishments or distractions.

Healey’s songwriting style has long been marked by a stripped-back philosophy, blending elements of classic rock, indie pop, psychedelic textures, and soulful melodies to create a sound that is unmistakably his own. The songs on 143 reflect this simplicity, presenting a raw and genuine perspective that prioritizes direct communication over excessive production frills.

Following a series of appearances at various UK festivals over the summer, Healey will be taking his new material on the road this October for a string of intimate live shows, giving audiences the opportunity to experience the songs in a setting that complements their intimate nature. The blend of vintage warmth, personal storytelling, and effortless charm that characterizes Willie J Healey’s music is poised to captivate audiences and further solidify his reputation as a uniquely talented artist.
