Ava Max, in her music video for the single “Lovin’ Myself,” proudly displays her iconic Max Cut hairstyle, with one side of her blonde hair cut shorter than the other. Despite temporarily shelving the look, she decided to bring it back in April, revealing that cutting it live onstage at Coachella reignited her sense of self. “I love my lopsided hair. I felt like I wasn’t myself without it, and I found that out after I cut it at Coachella because I feel more like myself now,” she shares.

The decision to stop wearing her hair in this distinct style was influenced by external opinions that had gotten under her skin. She confesses, “I took away the Max Cut essentially because people in the industry didn’t like it. People I was working with didn’t like it, and I was just like, ‘You know what? I’m just going to get rid of it if it’s that bad.'” However, Ava soon realized that the negative feedback represented only a minute fraction of the population, whereas she genuinely adored the look. This realization prompted her to embrace her original hairstyle once again, understanding that the majority of people appreciated it.

Reflecting on the impact of critical comments, Ava incorporated this sentiment into her music video for “Lovin’ Myself” from her upcoming album, “Don’t Click Play.” In the video, she is spotted wearing a sleeping mask that reads, “Ava Max sucks.” This playful gesture is a response to detractors who have advised against listening to her music. “It’s about all the comments I read about not clicking play on my music. ‘Don’t listen to Ava Max. Ava Max sucks.’ I just wanted to put that in the music video to show that I’m embracing it, and I don’t care what you say because what people say doesn’t affect me. I’m still loving myself, even if you think I suck,” Ava explains.

Through her experiences with her trademark hairstyle and the negativity she encountered, Ava Max emphasizes the importance of staying true to oneself and not letting criticisms compromise one’s identity. By reclaiming her Max Cut and boldly confronting disparaging remarks, she asserts her confidence and self-assurance in the face of external judgment. In doing so, Ava serves as a role model for embracing individuality and self-acceptance, regardless of external pressures.
