” Hawkins wrote on his website. “I know there are addicts that think they are too far gone to change. And I know there are people with an HIV diagnosis that think no one will ever love them. I want them to know they aren’t alone, and I understand their pain. And that there is hope even at the darkest times.”

Describing himself as “sober, married and thriving,” Hawkins uses his music to address difficult topics and share his own experiences. He speaks at HIV conferences, performs at Pride events globally, and aims to create a sense of community and understanding within his audience.

In an interview with The Advocate, Hawkins reflected on his challenging past, noting that while he recently turned 40 and got married, he has also faced significant struggles. “I had a really abusive childhood, I struggled with a terrible substance abuse problem, I was stigmatized by my HIV diagnosis, and I had major mental health struggles,” Hawkins shared. These difficulties, he acknowledged, are sadly common within the LGBTQIA community.

As a proud member of the LGBTQIA community, Hawkins believes that the country music industry is more accepting than many people realize, but acknowledges that there is still progress to be made. He expressed optimism about the growing presence of queer artists and looks forward to witnessing further advancement in the industry in the coming years.

Hawkins hopes that his music will resonate with those who feel marginalized or alone, offering a voice of understanding and compassion. By openly discussing his own experiences and struggles, he aims to provide solace and connection to individuals facing similar challenges.

In his song “Sin,” Hawkins delves into the depths of vulnerability, presenting an authentic and raw narrative that speaks to the human experience. Through his music, he seeks to create a sense of unity and support for those who may be navigating their own journeys of self-acceptance and resilience.

As Pride month unfolds, Hawkins stands as a beacon of strength and authenticity, using his platform to advocate for inclusivity and understanding within the country music community. With his unwavering commitment to openness and honesty, he continues to inspire and empower others to embrace their true selves, regardless of the obstacles they may face.
