Mick Ralphs, co-founder of Mott the Hoople and Bad Company, passes away at 81
Renowned English guitarist and songwriter, Mick Ralphs, a founding member of both Mott the Hoople and Bad Company, passed away at the age of 81. Ralphs had been struggling since suffering a stroke in 2016, which left him bedridden. Despite this, he was slated to be inducted into the prestigious Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in November.
Acknowledged for his significant contributions to classic British rock, Ralphs was remembered by Bad Company lead singer, Paul Rodgers, who expressed deep sadness at his passing. Describing Ralphs as a friend, songwriting partner, and an incredible guitarist with a great sense of humor, Rodgers highlighted the impact Ralphs had on their musical journey.
Notable for his songwriting prowess, Ralphs penned hits such as 1970’s “Ready for Love” for Mott the Hoople, subsequently reworked for Bad Company’s debut album in 1974, along with the popular track “Can’t Get Enough.” He also collaborated with Rodgers on the well-received song, “Feel Like Makin’ Love,” released in 1975 by Bad Company.
Hailing from Stoke Lacy, Herefordshire, England, Ralphs delved into blues guitar during his teenage years, leading to the formation of the Doc Thomas Group in 1966. Transitioning to Mott the Hoople in 1969, Ralphs played a pivotal role in the group’s journey to success, departing shortly after the hit song “All the Young Dudes,” produced by David Bowie, catapulted them to fame.
Turning a new leaf, Ralphs co-founded Bad Company alongside Rodgers, following the disbandment of Free, Rodgers’ previous group. The band, comprising Free drummer Simon Kirke and former King Crimson member Boz Burrell, embarked on a successful musical venture under Ralphs’ creative influence.
Reflecting on Ralphs’ impact, Kirke paid tribute to his dear friend’s remarkable talent as a songwriter and guitarist, emphasizing the profound loss felt by those who knew and admired him.
The music world mourns the loss of a luminary as Mick Ralphs leaves a legacy of timeless music and unforgettable memories. As fans and peers alike pay their respects, Ralphs’ indelible mark on rock music will continue to resonate for years to come.
