Acclaimed Indie Rock Band Exits Spotify With Bold Political Statement

Deerhoof, an acclaimed indie rock band, recently made a bold move by pulling their music off Spotify, the world’s largest music streaming platform. This decision came after Deerhoof learned that Spotify’s CEO, Daniel Ek, had taken on the role of chairman at an AI battle tech firm. The band announced their departure from Spotify on their official Instagram account, stating their reasons for the move.

“We’re taking Deerhoof off Spotify,” the band’s post read on June 30. “Daniel Ek uses $700 million of his Spotify fortune to become chair of AI battle tech company’ was not a headline we enjoyed reading this week. We don’t want our music killing people. We don’t want our success being tied to AI battle tech.”

Deerhoof, known for their 20th album “Noble and Godlike Ruin,” has enjoyed widespread acclaim and success as a touring act. In a statement released by the band’s representatives, Deerhoof provided further insight into their decision to leave Spotify.

“We are privileged that it was a pretty easy decision for us. Spotify only pays a pittance anyway, and we earn a lot more from touring,” the band explained. “But we also understand that other artists and labels do rely on Spotify for a bigger chunk of their income, and don’t judge those who can’t make the same move in the short term.”

The band further expressed their concerns about the rise of AI battle tech and its association with the super-rich. They highlighted the increasing role of technology in military and police actions, noting the potential negative consequences of allowing computers to take on more responsibilities for violent actions.

Deerhoof joins a growing list of artists who have voiced their concerns about Spotify’s policies. In 2022, Neil Young removed his music from the platform in protest of Spotify’s decision to host Joe Rogan’s podcast, which Young felt was spreading misinformation about COVID-19. However, Young later returned to Spotify after Rogan’s podcast became available on other platforms.

“I cannot leave all those services like I did Spotify, because my music would have no streaming outlet to music lovers at all, I have returned,” Young stated on his website.

Deerhoof’s decision to exit Spotify sends a clear message about their values and commitment to ethical considerations in the music industry. By taking a stand against Spotify’s ties to AI battle tech, the band has shown their dedication to upholding their principles, even at the cost of potential financial gain.
