city for their collaboration in bringing the project to fruition. Banning Jr. expressed his gratitude and shared some heartfelt words about his mother, Phyllis Banning. He mentioned that his mother, known for her love of butterflies, passed away unexpectedly in 2023 at the age of 69. The butterfly sculpture, a tribute to her memory, now stands proudly in Old Grove Park.
The stunning sculpture, crafted by Dale Rogers, a metal sculptor from Massachusetts, replaced a fountain that had been a focal point of the park for many years. The artwork consists of a silver stainless steel butterfly perched on a brown weathering steel base, with the butterfly facing both east and west to symbolize the sunrise and sunset. Surrounding the sculpture are purple coneflowers, Phyllis Banning’s favorite color, as well as a silver plaque featuring a purple border and inscription honoring her memory.
At the dedication ceremony held in the park, Mayor Dorinda Borer welcomed the Banning and Franco families, offering touching remarks about Phyllis Banning. Banning Jr., accompanied by his sister and brothers, expressed his appreciation for the support and assistance provided by the city, particularly acknowledging the efforts of the mayor’s office volunteer Beth Sabo. He shared a moving tribute to his mother, highlighting her kindness, generosity, and the enduring lessons of love and resilience she imparted.
Reflecting on his mother’s ties to West Haven, Banning Jr. emphasized her deep connection to the city. He described how she cherished her time spent by the shoreline, instilling in him a profound appreciation for their shared hometown. The choice of location for the sculpture holds special significance for him, as it serves as a reminder of the beauty, hope, and everlasting influence of a mother’s love.
In his closing remarks, Banning Jr. fondly recalled his mother’s belief that departures were never final goodbyes but rather temporary separations. With tears welling up, he conveyed the sentiment that though she may have departed this world, her transformative spirit lives on, continuing to touch the lives of those who remember and love her. The butterfly sculpture, now a permanent fixture by the shore, symbolizes Phyllis Banning’s essence — free, graceful, and timeless. It stands as a testament to her enduring presence in the hearts of those who knew and cherished her.
