Despised Icon to Release Highly Anticipated Album “Shadow Work” on October 31st
After a prolonged six-year period of quiet, the renowned Montreal deathcore pioneers Despised Icon are making a comeback. With their seventh full-length album, Shadow Work, scheduled for release on October 31, 2025, via Nuclear Blast Records, Despised Icon sets a new chapter in motion. This upcoming release is not only their first amalgamation of new material in years since 2019’s Purgatory but also serves as an intimate and introspective work deeply entrenched in personal growth and the band’s exemplary mark in the extreme music scene.
Having established in 2002, Despised Icon was among the pioneers in crafting and refining the deathcore genre, blending the intensity of death metal with the energy of hardcore. With their core lineup largely unchanged over two decades, Despised Icon proves they still possess the vigor that originally captivated their fan base. Shadow Work promises to be their most focused and dynamic album yet, intertwining high-velocity brutality with haunting melodies, groove-laden breakdowns, and the emotional depth acquired through experience.
Thematically, Shadow Work delves into the complexities of confronting and assimilating one’s darker side, also known as the “shadow” according to Carl Jung. Exploring themes of resilience, trauma, and inner healing, Despised Icon connects their narratives to the pandemonium of the current era. As a result, the album designs a sonic experience that strikes a chord not just through physical intensity but also emotional resonance.
Crafted in-house by Alex Erian and Eric Jarrin, the album receives its sonic finesse from the skilled hands of Christian Donaldson, notable for his work with Cryptopsy, Shadow of Intent, and Signs of the Swarm. The cover art, striking and evocative, is a creation of esteemed metal artist Eliran Kantor, whose portfolio includes visual masterpieces for Hatebreed, Thy Art Is Murder, and Cavalera.
Furthermore, Shadow Work unveils powerful vocal collaborations, featuring Matt Honeycutt of Kublai Khan TX, Scott Ian Lewis of Carnifex, and Tom Barber of Chelsea Grin and Darko US. With this trifecta of vocal prowess, the forthcoming release promises a diverse and punishing sonic assault.
The band is currently wrapping up their first music video from the album and has hinted at an imminent release of new music. As the band readies itself for the launch of Shadow Work, fans worldwide await eagerly for the music that Despised Icon is set to deliver in what seems to be a promising new era for the band.
