Steve Plunkett, lead singer of Autograph, cranks up the radio for 2025
Autograph’s classic hit “Turn Up The Radio” from 1985 has been given a fresh makeover by founder Steve Plunkett for his new album. The band, discovered by renowned producer Andy Johns in Los Angeles in 1983, gained recognition while touring with Van Halen and released their debut album, “Sign In Please,” later that year. Initially a slow starter, the album eventually made its mark on the Billboard chart in June 1985, with the iconic track “Turn Up The Radio” playing a pivotal role in its success.
Despite initial doubts from their label about the song’s commercial viability, “Turn Up The Radio” went on to become a rock classic, earning a place on various music charts and lists. Reflecting on the band’s early success, Steve Plunkett recalls 1985 as a great year filled with constant touring and living the rock ‘n’ roll dream. In celebration of the 40th anniversary, Plunkett decided to revisit the album with new recordings and a modern sonic approach, emphasizing the timeless appeal of the songs.
The new album, titled “Sign In Again,” features all ten tracks from the original album, with slight adjustments to the running order. While tracks like “Send Her To Me,” “Turn Up The Radio,” and “Nineteen and Non Stop” retain their essence, fresh arrangements and dynamic performances breathe new life into the music. Plunkett’s post-Autograph endeavors in scoring movies and TV have added a contemporary touch to his sound, showcasing innovative directions and dimensions in his music.
The album offers a nostalgic trip back to the heyday of rock music, inviting listeners to turn up the volume and immerse themselves in the electrifying tunes. From the infectious energy of “Turn Up The Radio” to the heartfelt balladry of “In The Night,” each track on the album captures a different facet of Autograph’s musical prowess. Plunkett’s solo reinterpretation of the songs brings a personal touch to the familiar melodies, reigniting the rock spirit that defined the band’s legacy.
As fans revisit the original video for “Turn Up The Radio” and reminisce about the band’s glory days, it’s clear that Autograph’s music continues to resonate with audiences. The enduring appeal of songs like “Send Her to Me,” “Cloud 10,” and “Deep End” demonstrates the timelessness of Autograph’s sound. With “Sign In Again,” Steve Plunkett pays tribute to the band’s legacy while adding a contemporary twist, ensuring that the spirit of rock ‘n’ roll lives on in his music.
