Dion set to launch new album The Rock ‘n’ Roll Philosopher on October 24
Rock and Roll Hall of Famer Dion DiMucci, a notable figure in American popular music, has disclosed the release of his upcoming 16-track album, The Rock ‘n’ Roll Philosopher, through KTBA Records on October 24. This album is accompanied by a book of the same title, co-authored with Adam Jablin, and will be accessible in digital and CD formats.
The compilation is kickstarted by the single I’m Your Gangster of Love, penned by Dion, Mike Aquilina, and released across all platforms. This album reflects Dion’s signature style of blending rock and roll with blues, folk, and contemporary sounds, staying true to his roots while exploring new musical avenues. The music video for the single, inspired by 1930s and 40s gangster films, accompanies its release.
Dion, born in the Bronx in 1939, gained initial fame in the late 1950s as a member of Dion and The Belmonts. His successful venture into a solo career solidified his place in music history, with hits like Runaround Sue, The Wanderer, and Ruby Baby becoming iconic rock and roll anthems. In 1968, his emotionally charged ballad Abraham, Martin and John resonated with a nation in mourning after the tragic assassinations of Martin Luther King Jr. and Robert F. Kennedy.
Throughout his musical journey, Dion has not been afraid to evolve, transitioning from doo-wop and rock and roll to folk, blues, gospel, and contemporary rock. Inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1989, he has collaborated with diverse artists, always experimenting while retaining his Bronx charisma.
The album, much like his memoir, delves into themes such as music, addiction, recovery, faith, and creativity, serving as a personal reflection on Dion’s life. Speaking of the project, Dion states, “I pulled together some of the songs I discussed in the book and some of them I changed.”
Continuing his trend of successful collaborative projects, The Rock ‘n’ Roll Philosopher features acclaimed artists like Eric Clapton, Joe Bonamassa, Mark Knopfler, Sonny Landreth, and late musician Scott Kempner. These collaborations enrich the album, offering a blend of talents that enhance Dion’s musical legacy.
Highlighted tracks on the album include Dion’s classics like Runaround Sue, The Wanderer, and Ruby Baby, revamped for a fresh perspective. Additionally, new recordings of songs like Abraham, Martin and John, and intimate tracks like New York Minute and New York Is My Home showcase Dion’s versatility and enduring appeal.
With comprehensive liner notes by music historian Gene Sculatti, based on a recent conversation with Dion, the album flows seamlessly, creating an ideal concert tracklist that encapsulates Dion’s musical journey and evolution.
In summary, Dion’s latest album, The Rock ‘n’ Roll Philosopher, is a testament to his enduring legacy in the music industry, showcasing his ability to reinvent himself while staying true to his roots. The album promises to be a musical journey that showcases the breadth of Dion’s talent and influence in American music history.
