Cause for concern? “Mountain rescuer” lead actor unexpectedly discusses series death
In 2019, after embodying the character of Tobias Herbrechter in the popular ZDF series “The Mountain Rescue Team” since 2009, Markus Brandl, 49, made a pivotal decision to step away from the show. The reason behind his departure was driven by a desire for professional growth. Brandl shared that at that time, he had the opportunity to explore new acting possibilities due to being represented by a new agency and receiving numerous previously unattainable offers.
However, Brandl’s plans took an unexpected turn due to the unforeseen circumstances brought about by the COVID-19 pandemic. The pandemic resulted in the postponement of many of his intended acting projects, preventing him from pursuing artistic endeavors outside of the world of the Mountain Rescue Team. Eventually, he was called back to the ZDF set to film a “Mountain Rescue Team” special with his colleague Sebastian Ströbel. Brandl found immense joy in the filming process, prompting him to decide on a permanent return to the show in 2022.
Upon being approached for his comeback, Brandl expressed immediate relief over a crucial narrative decision made by the show’s creators. This newfound contentment led him to acknowledge the quality of his work on the series, stating, “I have realized that I have to finally accept that what I am doing here is good.” Brandl’s happiness with his decision to return to the series is evident, with him humorously remarking, “Once a Mountain Rescuer, always a Mountain Rescuer – they won’t get rid of me now!”
In a podcast interview on the BR show “The Schlager Brunch,” Brandl shared his enduring fascination with the homegrown series. He praised the mix of action, humor, drama, and picturesque landscapes featured in the show. From an acting perspective, he particularly appreciates the opportunity to delve into both physical challenges and personal conflicts portrayed in the iconic ZDF series. Brandl’s wife, Nathalie Schott, who also works as an actress on “The Mountain Doctor,” understands the demands of the genre firsthand.
Brandl’s return to the series appears to have brought him a sense of peace and contentment, illustrated by his light-hearted wish for his character’s series death to occur at the age of 99 during a moment of intimacy on the Gafstein peak. His journey back to the Mountain Rescue Team has not only reignited his passion for the show but has also solidified his commitment to the character and the series as a whole.
