Video Captures Plane Crashing Into Car on US Highway
Witnesses on a busy Florida highway were shocked when a small plane unexpectedly crashed into a car. Captured on a dashcam video shared by Spectrum 13, the footage showed a “fixed wing multi-engine aircraft” colliding with a 2023 Toyota Camry traveling southbound on I-95 in Cocoa at approximately 5:45 p.m. local time on a Monday, according to the Florida Highway Patrol via Spectrum News 13. Rush-hour traffic came to a standstill as the plane descended from the sky, heading straight for the vehicle in an attempt to make an emergency landing.
The video displayed the plane hitting the Camry from the rear, bouncing on top of it, and then crashing down to the left, creating a shower of sparks in the process.
Despite the dramatic impact, the 57-year-old female driver of the Camry sustained only minor injuries and was promptly taken to a nearby hospital, according to the Florida Highway Patrol through Spectrum News 13. The pilot and his 27-year-old male passenger, whose identities were not disclosed, emerged unscathed and cooperated with authorities during the investigation into the crash.
Jim Coffey described the terrifying experience, mentioning the plane narrowly avoiding his vehicle and ultimately striking the Camry moments later.
“I noticed it was there, because there’s a plane right there, I was like, ‘Hopefully it lands to the side,'” said Peter Coffey, Jim’s son, who witnessed the event unfold.
“It might aim around and not hit the car, but bam, the wheel just smacked right dab on the back of the car,” he added.
Fortunately, the car managed to remain upright and was only pushed to the side, leaving both occupants of the vehicle fortunate to escape with minor injuries.
The Federal Aviation Administration will be leading an investigation to determine the cause of the emergency landing, while the Florida Highway Patrol will conduct a separate inquiry into the crash. Authorities assured the public that a thorough investigation will be carried out following the alarming incident.
