Chevy Chase Emerges from 8-Day Coma After Heart Failure, Dubbed ‘Back From the Dead’
The recent revelation about Chevy Chase’s health crisis in 2021 is painting a grim picture of the comedian’s ordeal. Disclosed in a new documentary titled “I’m Chevy Chase and You’re Not,” set to premiere on CNN on Thursday, January 1, 2026, at 8/7c, the documentary captures the harrowing account by Chevy’s wife, Jayni Chase, who recounts the eight days Chevy spent in a coma following a severe heart failure episode.
According to Jayni, Chevy took swift action by going to the hospital as soon as he sensed something amiss with his health. However, upon arrival at the emergency room, his heart ceased to function. Jayni elaborates that Chevy developed cardiomyopathy during his years of drinking, which caused his heart muscles to weaken significantly, leading to a lack of proper blood circulation.
Inside the hospital, Chevy was placed in a medically-induced coma, a state that persisted for eight agonizing days, as revealed by his close friend, Peter Aaron, in the documentary. Caley Chase, one of Chevy’s daughters, recounts the emotional rollercoaster the family endured during this trying time. She mentions that the doctor had alerted them about the uncertain outcome, cautioning them to brace for the worst. Miraculously, Chevy regained consciousness but was initially limited to communicating through his voice, indicating the severity of his condition.
The documentary also sheds light on Chevy’s amusing interaction with a nurse when, upon awakening, he made a witty “That’s what she said” joke, much to the delight of his daughter Caley. Despite his miraculous recovery, the effects of the 2021 incident persist in the form of memory lapses for Chevy, a concerning detail brought to light in the documentary.
When Chevy chose to keep the severity of his health issues concealed during the time of his hospitalization, his return home prompted a statement to Page Six, expressing his gratitude for reuniting with his loved ones and updating on his health status. He shared, “I can only say how happy I am to now be back with my family. I’m feeling good. I was in the hospital five weeks. A heart issue. So, for now, I’m around the house. Not going anywhere.”
“I’m Chevy Chase and You’re Not” encompasses both the triumphs and setbacks of Chevy’s career journey, from his meteoric rise as a Saturday Night Live luminary to establishing himself as a prominent figure in the film industry. Furthermore, the documentary delves into Chevy’s reputation for being a formidable collaborator in Hollywood, offering an intimate glance into the multifaceted persona of the renowned comedian.
