Perry Bamonte, member of The Cure, dies at 65

Perry Bamonte, the esteemed guitarist and keyboardist known for his time with the Cure, passed away at the age of 65 following a brief illness during the Christmas holiday while at his home.

The announcement of Bamonte’s death was made on the Cure’s official website, where they reflected on his significant contributions to the band during his two distinct periods with them. His initial tenure lasted from 1990 to 2005, and he rejoined in 2022 until his passing.

Affectionately called “Teddy,” Bamonte was described as quiet, intense, intuitive, constant, and immensely creative by the band. He was regarded as a warm-hearted and essential component of the Cure’s journey. Initially hired as the band’s caretaker from 1984 to 1989, Bamonte became a full-fledged member in 1990. He played guitar, six-string bass, and keyboard on various albums, including “The Wish,” “Wild Mood Swings,” “Bloodflowers,” acoustic hits, and numerous live shows. Over his 14-year stint, he performed in over 400 concerts. In 2022, he reconnected with the Cure, took part in 90 memorable performances, which culminated with the “The Show of a Lost World” concert in London on November 1, 2024. The band expressed their sympathy for his family and acknowledged that Bamonte would be sorely missed.

Perry Bamonte was born in London in 1960 and was introduced to the world of the Cure through his brother Daryl, who worked as their tour manager. Bamonte eventually transitioned to be lead singer Robert Smith’s personal assistant.
