Teacher recounts being shot and taunted by shooter in Uvalde school shooting trial
On another day of testimonies during the Adrian Gonzales trial, Texas Rangers and Uvalde CISD employees recounted the harrowing events that unfolded inside Robb Elementary during the Uvalde school shooting. Reyes also recounted hearing the shooter coughing and footsteps moving between Room 111 and Room 112 as the horrific events unfolded.
In a desperate bid to survive, Reyes tried to deceive the gunman by closing his eyes and whispering to his students to do the same, shielding them from witnessing the atrocities around them. The shooter, in a twisted act of cruelty, taunted Reyes by splashing his blood on his face and even shooting him in the back. When Border Patrol agents breached the classroom, Reyes mustered the strength to convey that he was still alive, and they swiftly moved him to the hallway for medical attention, marking the end of his nightmare in Room 111.
During the trial, the prosecution showcased photos of each child in Reyes’ classroom and some in Room 112. With a heavy heart, he recounted each child’s fate to the jury, revealing that, tragically, most did not survive the senseless violence that day. The defense team highlighted that the connecting door between Room 111 and Room 112 was unlocked against the rules, with Reyes explaining that it was typically accessible for a special education teacher who often used it.
The proceedings also shed light on Reyes’ prior reports of issues with his main door locking mechanism, which he had raised with the administration.
