Prince William recently displayed his proficiency in Welsh in a video that may have gone unnoticed by some. The Wales Air Ambulance Charity released a video message on March 1, where Prince William, 43, paid tribute to the organization’s 25th anniversary.

At the beginning of the video, Prince William can be heard saying “Llongyfarchiadau,” which translates to “congratulations” in Welsh. He then continued, praising the organization for its development from a single helicopter operating five days a week to one of the most advanced teams in the U.K. since its inception on St. David’s Day in 2001. The video, seemingly filmed in a favored spot at Windsor Castle, showcased Prince William commending the charity’s accomplishments and speaking a bit more Welsh towards the end of his message, expressing his gratitude with “Diolch yn fawr,” which means “Thank you very much” in Welsh.

Prince William, a former air ambulance pilot himself, became the patron of Wales Air Ambulance in 2023. Apart from his involvement with the charity, he also exhibited his Welsh language skills in another video shared on the same day with his wife, Princess Kate.

Princess Kate, 44, made her debut speaking Welsh in a video posted on Instagram on March 1, alongside Prince William, as they wished the people of Wales a happy St. David’s Day. St. David’s Day is an annual celebration in Wales on March 1, and the royal couple conversed exclusively in Welsh during the video, giving viewers a glimpse into their close connection to the country.

Last week, Prince William and Princess Kate visited Wales to commemorate the community ahead of St. David’s Day festivities, underscoring their deep ties with the country. Prince William assumed the title of the Prince of Wales in September 2022 after his father, King Charles, proclaimed him as the heir to the throne, while Kate became the Princess of Wales, a title previously held by William’s mother, Princess Diana.

William and Kate resided in Wales from 2010 to 2013 during William’s tenure as a search and rescue helicopter pilot at RAF Valley in Anglesey. Princess Kate embarked on her first official royal duty in Wales when she christened a lifeboat at Trearddur Bay Lifeboat Station in February 2011 ahead of her marriage to Prince William that April.

During the event, Kate’s rendition of the Welsh national anthem, “Hen Wlad fy Nhadau (Land of my Fathers),” won accolades from the locals. The royal couple embraced their roles as the Prince and Princess of Wales, vowing to strengthen their bond with Welsh communities and offering support for the people of Wales in their endeavors.
