Golfers donate £1500 to Lanarkshire charity on week-long golf outing
A generous group of local golfers recently banded together to raise an impressive £1500 for Maggie’s Lanarkshire through a week-long charity golf outing. The group, consisting of 24 friends with the support of various partners, organized a memorable trip to Belek, Turkey. Led by trip organizer Paul Boltom, the group engaged in six rounds of golf across four courses from November 29 to December 6, combining the love of the sport with a noble fundraising endeavor.
During the trip, participants introduced a light-hearted “fine system” where penalties were given for various amusing infractions, such as losing a golf ball, hitting a tree, sporting the wrong attire, or even showing up with gel in their hair. Every penny collected through these entertaining forfeits was donated to Maggie’s Lanarkshire, specifically in support of group member Lesley Mooney from Carluke, who has been utilizing the cancer support services provided by the center.
Reflecting on her experience, Lesley shared, “When I first visited Maggie’s after my cancer diagnosis in January 2024, I was seeking advice and reassurance as I commenced treatment. However, I found so much more – a sanctuary of care, comfort, and understanding where I could freely express my fears without fear of judgment. The yoga classes, support groups, and the camaraderie became a lifeline for me during those challenging times. Even after completing treatment, Maggie’s continued to be a guiding light as I adjusted to my ‘new normal.'”
Paul, age 60, expressed the group’s natural inclination to support Maggie’s, emphasizing their desire to make the golfing trip not just about the sport but also about having a meaningful impact together. He praised the success of the fine system, which evolved into a heartwarming way to give back to the community. Billy McGill, aged 55, echoed Paul’s sentiments, highlighting the incredible spirit of generosity and camaraderie that defined the week-long golfing excursion. As an integral part of the charity coordination efforts, Billy emphasized the significance of the £1500 fundraising achievement, indicating the profound impact of their collective contributions towards a cause that held deep personal meaning for many in the group.
The success of this charitable initiative serves as a poignant reminder of the power of community and shared purpose. By coming together over a mutual love for golf and a genuine desire to support a worthy cause, this group of dedicated individuals managed to turn a leisurely golf trip into a meaningful philanthropic endeavor. The collective generosity, goodwill, and sense of camaraderie displayed throughout the week underscore the profound impact that a unified group of like-minded individuals can have in creating positive change within their community. Through their selfless actions and unwavering commitment to supporting a cause close to their hearts, these local golfers have exemplified the true spirit of giving and demonstrated the transformative power of coming together for a common purpose.
