Deer Tick releases ‘Mary Singletary’ from latest album ‘Coin-O-Matic’

Deer Tick has recently revealed details about their upcoming album, “Coin-O-Matic,” set to be released on June 5th through ATO Records. The band has also released the lead single “Mary Singletary,” accompanied by a visual directed by Colin Devin Moore.

The album’s title, “Coin-O-Matic,” draws inspiration from a cigarette-vending-machine business that served as a front for Raymond Patriarca, a notorious mob boss in American history. John McCauley, the band’s lead singer and guitarist, reflects on the influence of Providence’s underworld on everyday life in Rhode Island. McCauley mentions his desire for the album to capture a sense of nostalgia for the seediness associated with mob activity that was prevalent in the area in years past.

One track on the album, “Mary Singletary,” delves into the complexities of an Irish-Catholic upbringing, exploring themes of guilt and societal taboos. McCauley draws from stories of previous generations, highlighting the scandalous nature of relationships between Catholics and Protestants during those times. The song also touches on Catholic guilt and premarital sex, infused with a touch of whimsical violence reminiscent of Looney Tunes.

“Coin-O-Matic” serves as a follow-up to the band’s previous album, “Emotional Contracts,” marking their first venture into self-production in their twenty-year career. Guitarist Ian O’Neil emphasizes the freedom and creativity that came with working independently, allowing the band to experiment and embellish their rock songs without external constraints. The addition of guest musicians like Steve Berlin and Rob Crowell brings new colors and textures to the album, resulting in what drummer Dennis Ryan describes as a true reflection of the band’s essence.
