Jill Biden shares insights in new book on Joe Biden’s choice not to run for reelection in 2024
Jill Biden is finally opening up about the challenging decision her husband, Joe Biden, made to end his 2024 presidential reelection bid. The decision came amidst concerns from Democrats about his age, health, and ability to compete against Republican Donald Trump in a rematch of the 2020 campaign.
Having been a political spouse for nearly 50 years, Jill Biden explained that she had kept her feelings about the situation private until now. In her soon-to-be-released memoir, titled “View from the East Wing: A Memoir,” she will delve into the three-week period when her husband chose to bring his five-decade-long political career to an end.
“View from the East Wing: A Memoir” is set to be published by Gallery Books, an imprint of Simon & Schuster, on June 2. Jill Biden shared that writing the book was a healing process for her. She described the memoir as a reflection of her four years as the first lady and an exploration of the unique experiences she and Joe shared during his presidency.
Delving into the last chapter of Joe Biden’s political career, the memoir will cover the challenging moments leading up to his withdrawal from the 2024 presidential race. Concerns surrounding Joe Biden’s age and fitness to serve a second term became publicly discussed after a disappointing debate with Trump in June 2024. After initially insisting he would remain in the race, he eventually withdrew and endorsed Kamala Harris, who later ran against Trump but lost in the November 2024 election.
Jill Biden’s memoir will offer a balanced view of her husband’s time as president. It will also reflect on the challenges faced by women who juggle multiple roles, like herself. During her tenure, she made history as the first first lady to maintain her career as an educator and continued teaching while at the White House.
The former first lady will also touch on the personal struggle she and Joe faced after he was diagnosed with prostate cancer in May 2025. Emphasizing the shock of the diagnosis, she revealed that the cancer had spread to his bones, requiring long-term management. Despite the diagnosis, Jill Biden expressed confidence that Joe would continue to live out his natural life.
Jill Biden’s memoir will also address the historic context of Joe Biden’s presidency, including the COVID-19 pandemic and the aftermath of the Capitol insurrection on January 6, 2021. It will highlight her advocacy efforts during Joe’s presidency, including promoting vaccination, supporting military families, and advancing education and women’s health initiatives.
Before becoming the first lady, Jill Biden served as the second lady of the United States from 2009 to 2017 during Joe Biden’s tenure as vice president under Barack Obama. Currently, she chairs the Milken Institute’s Women’s Health Network and has authored other books, including “Where the Light Enters,” which chronicled her life with Joe Biden.
