Checking in with Summercamp – Santa Barbara’s Local Newspaper
The 1990s marked an era of music in Santa Barbara where local bands flourished, music venues thrived, and an unparalleled sense of community united musicians and fans alike. Among the bands that emerged during this period, alternative rock group Summercamp stood out, consisting of Tim Cullen, Misha Feldmann, Sean McCue, and Tony Sevener. The nostalgia of this time comes full circle, with Summercamp reuniting after over 25 years for a show on April 18 at the Lobero Theatre, alongside Nerf Herder and Ridel High.
Having grown up hearing her father, Sean McCue, share stories of playing for massive crowds and interacting with fans, Anya Rose McCue now anticipates witnessing Summercamp’s return to the stage. The upcoming show serves as a reunion not only for the bands but also for the friends and fans eagerly awaiting this event. The camaraderie amongst the band members is evident as they prepare for their performance, reminiscing about the past and sharing laughs during rehearsals.
Summercamp’s inception can be traced back to high school friendships between McCue and Cullen, bonding over music and guitar. Along with Feldmann and Sevener, the band found its formation, establishing a creative environment filled with collaboration and support. Reflecting on their early days, the band recalls a vibrant local music scene in Santa Barbara, where talent flourished, and musicians came together to uplift one another.
As Summercamp’s popularity soared, they caught the attention of major record labels, eventually signing with Maverick Records. Their debut album, Pure Juice, propelled their career, leading to tours across North America and performances at renowned music festivals alongside industry icons like Snoop Dogg and Korn. A pivotal moment for the band was playing at the Fuji Rock Festival in Japan, a memorable experience amidst a typhoon that threatened the show but added a thrilling element to their performance.
Despite facing challenges with their record label that prevented the release of a second album, the members of Summercamp continued to pursue music individually. Cullen embarked on a solo career, releasing albums and touring internationally with Sevener and Feldmann. Each member continued to dive into music, keeping the spirit of Summercamp alive in their individual ventures.
The anticipation surrounding Summercamp’s reunion show is a testament to the lasting impact the band had on their fans and the music scene of the 1990s. As they gear up to take the stage once again, the members of Summercamp reflect on the enduring camaraderie and creative energy that brought them together and fueled their musical journey.
