Modest Mouse reveals upcoming album “An Eraser And A Maze” with new single “Picking Dragons’ Pockets”

A few months back, during the Ice Cream Floats Modest Mouse concert cruise, Isaac Brock unveiled some artwork that piqued his interest. The artwork was for the upcoming Modest Mouse album titled An Eraser And A Maze. Interestingly, the exterior of the album artwork was monochrome, while the interior was filled with vibrant colors, showcasing Isaac Brock’s unique artistic preferences. It seemed like a classic move from Brock to keep the color hidden inside, perhaps to create a sense of mystery and intrigue for the listeners.

Today, the official announcement for the album was made, revealing that it is set to be released on June 5 on Brock’s independent label Glacial Pace. This marks the first Modest Mouse album to be released on an indie label since the acclaimed 1997 record, The Lonesome Crowded West. Notably, the release date coincides with the return of another Pacific Northwest band, Death Cab For Cutie, with their first indie-label album in almost two decades. The album was produced by Brock with contributions from Jacknife Lee, Suzy Shinn, and Justin Raisen.

Interestingly, the announcement of An Eraser And A Maze comes shortly after the 30th anniversary of Modest Mouse’s debut album, This Is A Long Drive For Someone With Nothing To Think About.

Fans were given a taste of the new album a month ago with the release of the track “Look How Far.” Alongside the album announcement, the band dropped the opening track, “Picking Dragons’ Pockets,” which showcases a fusion of musical elements, including a subtle synth backdrop, a dynamic drums-guitar introduction that could almost be mistaken for a ska track with the addition of horns, and thought-provoking lyrics from Brock. The track captures Brock’s unique style, with lines like “I ain’t your passenger now, nor your equipment” and “I’m not crazy ’bout what they’re so crazy ’bout now.”

The tracklist for An Eraser And A Maze includes a diverse range of songs, promising a rich listening experience for fans. From “Remember Yourself” to “Impossiblesomedays,” the album is packed with intriguing titles that hint at the depth and variety of the music to come.
