Converge versus Converge: A Comparison on Decibel Magazine

Enough then peaks with “Force Meets Presence,” which serves as the sonic equivalent to a blunt object. There are three songs after, all setting a similar tone, with “Gilded Cage” even hinting at the noise rock-heavy style of the next album.

If Love is Not Enough was Converge’s scorched earth album, then Hum of Hurt is their brooding (but explosive) record. Both albums were recorded in the same session, which makes the stark differences all the more surprising.
“The final sprint during the last round of writing led to a lot more material than we anticipated,” guitarist/producer Kurt Ballou mentioned about the creation of Hum of Hurt. “We had to figure out how to handle all these songs. In today’s fast-paced music consumption environment, people wouldn’t have the time or attention span for a double album. We wanted to ensure each song had the best chance to be heard and appreciated.”
Lead single “Doom in Bloom” brings a modern touch similar to Converge’s recent albums: Jacob Bannon’s intense vocals are surrounded by skronky riffs and rhythms addressing personal and internal struggles. The standout tracks on the album—“It Only Gets Worse,” “Detonator,” and the title track—combine Converge’s signature crescendos and energetic riffs with colorful and off-kilter melodies. Additionally, “I Won’t Let You Go” introduces one of the most distinct riffs in the Converge library, while “Dream Debris” slows down the pace, becoming the longest track on either album.

While there may not be more Converge albums in 2026, the release of Love is Not Enough and Hum of Heart marks a monumental year in the band’s history. Converge has remained a constant force in the music scene, and these albums are evidence of their ability to continuously reinvent themselves and their music, shaping their own path.
Hum of Heart and Love is Not Enough are now available, showcasing Converge’s versatility and enduring passion for creating powerful, thought-provoking music.
