After years of speculation and anticipation, Sacramento County has officially solidified Discovery Park as the permanent home for Aftershock, the region’s largest rock festival. The County Board of Supervisors approved a groundbreaking 10-year agreement with rock promoter Danny Wimmer Presents (DWP), granting the entertainment company the rights to host up to three multi-day festivals annually at Discovery Park until 2035.

This decision marks the end of any hopes for Aftershock’s return to Elverta’s Gibson Ranch, a move that initially seemed promising back in 2015 when the festival temporarily relocated to northern Sacramento. The experiment at Gibson Ranch saw over 45,000 metal fans descending upon the quiet, oak-shaded acres, but ultimately lasted just one weekend due to various logistical challenges.

The move to Elverta was met with significant obstacles, including severe traffic congestion on surrounding roads like Elverta Road, Watt Avenue, and Rio Linda Boulevard, causing chaos for commuters and concertgoers alike. Additionally, the lack of lush turf at Gibson Ranch led to massive dust storms, turning the festival grounds into an arid landscape. The noise and trash generated by the event also sparked backlash from local residents and livestock owners in the area.

Realizing the limitations of the rural venue, DWP made the strategic decision to return to Discovery Park, citing its proximity to downtown amenities, major freeways, and public transit as key factors in the festival’s sustainability. This shift back to the urban setting has paid off tremendously, with Aftershock now serving as a global music destination, drawing fans from all 50 states and 30 countries and generating millions in local economic impact.

Under the new agreement, Sacramento County stands to benefit from increased revenue, with attendance-based permit fees and full reimbursement for county costs. A portion of these funds will be reinvested into regional parks and community programs, providing a direct boost to local infrastructure and services. Furthermore, the deal emphasizes support for county-based vendors, service providers, and food and beverage businesses, ensuring that the local economy sees a share of the festival’s financial success.

With the future of Aftershock and other DWP festivals secured at Discovery Park for the next decade, Sacramento County can look forward to continued economic growth and cultural vibrancy. The stages may stay downtown, but the impact of these events will be felt throughout the region, bolstering businesses, community programs, and the overall music economy for years to come.
