Sacramento County Music Festivals Ensure Long-term Future Until 2035
Sacramento County will continue to host two major music festivals, Aftershock and GoldenSky, at Discovery Park for the next decade following a new 10-year agreement approved by the Sacramento County Board of Supervisors with festival producer Danny Wimmer Presents. This agreement allows for up to three multi-day festivals each year at Discovery Park through 2035. The decision ensures the continuation of these major events while also bringing economic benefits, funding for park improvements, and an increase in regional tourism.
Sacramento County First District Supervisor Phil Serna emphasized the importance of these festivals in showcasing the community, culture, and art of Sacramento County and the broader region to a global audience. He highlighted the opportunities they provide for local businesses, workers, and the resources that can be reinvested back into the American River Parkway. Serna praised the partnership between public and private entities that fosters lasting benefits for both the people and the environment.
Danny Wimmer Presents, founded by entrepreneur Danny Wimmer, is known for producing some of the largest music festivals in the country, drawing visitors from all over the United States and the world. Aftershock, held at Discovery Park since 2012, and GoldenSky, launched in 2022, have become significant economic drivers for Sacramento. Aftershock generated an estimated $35 million in local economic impact in 2025, attracting attendees from all 50 states and over 30 countries. GoldenSky had an estimated economic impact of $14.1 million in 2024 with approximately 75,000 attendees.
The recent agreement ensures the return of GoldenSky to Discovery Park in 2027 under a three-year commitment. The strong partnership among Sacramento County, Visit Sacramento, Danny Wimmer Presents, and other regional stakeholders aims to retain and grow major events that benefit the local economy. The Sacramento County Office of Economic Development led negotiations to maximize the economic and community benefits generated by these festivals. Sacramento County will receive permit revenue, reimbursement for county costs related to the events, and funding for park and community program improvements.
A commitment to prioritize Sacramento County-based vendors, service providers, and local food and beverage businesses is included in the agreement. This approach aims to support the network of businesses and workers who contribute to the success of these events. The festivals not only bring visitors to the county, but also create opportunities for local businesses and residents.
The agreement also allocates up to $300,000 for initial site improvements at Discovery Park, including upgrades to the parking area and enhancements to open space areas. Sacramento County Regional Parks will oversee these projects to align with long-term plans for the park and the American River Parkway. The festivals have played a crucial role in introducing visitors to Sacramento’s music scene, outdoor activities, and local businesses, showcasing the region on a global stage. The new agreement secures Discovery Park as a premier music festival destination on the West Coast through 2035.
