New Yamaha CS-80-style synthesizer plugin available in free beta version, Morphoice Unstable
A new Synthesizer plugin inspired by the iconic Yamaha CS-80 has recently been introduced to the market. This plugin, named Morphoice Unstable, offers a unique take on the classic CS-80 sound. While not a direct emulation of the original hardware, Unstable features many modeled characteristics of the CS-80 combined with additional elements that set it apart from other plugins.
One standout feature of Unstable is its dual synthesis layers, each equipped with a CS-80-modeled oscillator offering noise, sawtooth, and pulse waves with adjustable pulse width and variable-speed modulation. Unlike the original hardware, each oscillator’s level can be freely adjusted, allowing for flexible waveform mixing. The filter section of Unstable also diverges from the CS-80 by including both a modeled highpass filter and a new Moog-style ladder filter with self-oscillation capabilities.
In addition to these features, Unstable includes an emulation of a highly musical ring modulator with a custom analog-style attack and decay envelope for modifying modulation speed, as well as a dedicated drive circuit that adds warmth and subtle harmonic distortion to sounds. To further enhance sounds, the plugin is equipped with a multi-effects processor featuring DarkStar reverb, delay, and WingMen chorus effects, creating a rich and textured audio experience.
One of Unstable’s standout features is its advanced 16-step arpeggiator, offering variable note and modulation values, though it is still under development in the beta version. The interface also includes a ribbon controller for pitch-bending sounds up to an octave. Although the beta version does not include presets, the plugin’s early demo showcases a rich and captivating sound, highlighting its potential to deliver unique and diverse sonic experiences.
Morphoice Unstable is currently available as a free download during its beta phase, with no details yet on the pricing of the official release version. It is compatible with VST3 and AU plugin formats on macOS (both native Apple Silicon and Intel) and Windows operating systems. With its unique approach to the CS-80 sound and innovative features, Morphoice Unstable promises to offer musicians and producers a fresh and inspiring tool for creating unique and expressive electronic sounds.
