Mariah Carey, Chubby Checker, Cyndi Lauper, OutKast, and Phish have received nominations for induction into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 2025. The list also features musical brothers, the Black Crowes, and Oasis, known for their public feuds and subsequent reunions.
Among the 14 performer nominees announced by the Hall, the list includes Bad Company, Joe Cocker, Billy Idol, Joy Division/New Order, Maná, Soundgarden, and the White Stripes. Eight of these nominees are making their first appearance on the ballot this year, including Bad Company, the Black Crowes, Chubby Checker, Joe Cocker, Billy Idol, Maná, OutKast, and Phish.
Mariah Carey and Chubby Checker are two artists with significant influence on the charts and cultural impact. Carey boasts an impressive record of 19 No. 1 hits on the Billboard Hot 100, while Checker’s iconic songs “The Twist” and “Let’s Twist Again” are considered classics in the rock ‘n’ roll genre.
Oasis, a dominant British band in the 1990s, is known for hits like “Wonderwall” and “Don’t Look Back in Anger.” The band’s sound was distinguished by its singalong rock choruses and the dynamic between guitarist-songwriter Noel Gallagher and his brother, Liam, the lead singer. The Black Crowes, their American counterpart, blend Southern boogie, blues harmonica, and glam rock elements, creating a unique sound since their debut album “Shake Your Money Maker.” The brothers behind the band, Chris Robinson and Rich Robinson, overcame years of silence between them to celebrate their nomination in humble terms.
Cyndi Lauper gained fame in the 1980s with popular songs like “Time After Time” and “Girls Just Want To Have Fun.” She later won a Tony Award for her work on “Kinky Boots.” OutKast, comprising André 3000 and Big Boi, is renowned for pushing the boundaries of hip-hop, having earned six Grammy Awards.
The upcoming 2025 inductees will be announced in late April, alongside inductees selected under special committee categories such as Musical Influence, Musical Excellence, and the Ahmet Ertegun Non-Performer Award. To be eligible for induction, artists must have released their first commercial recording at least 25 years before their nomination. The induction ceremony is scheduled to take place in Los Angeles later this year.
Voting for the nominees will involve over 1,200 artists, historians, and industry professionals. Criteria for selection include an artist’s impact on their peers, the longevity of their career, and their innovation in musical style and technique. Last year’s inductees included Mary J. Blige, Cher, Foreigner, and A Tribe Called Quest, among others.
