Joe Hodgson, a guitarist from Ballymagorry near Strabane, Lifford, and the border, is set to release his new album, Fields of Redemption. Reflecting on pivotal moments in his career, Joe credits a life-changing experience when he saw Gary Moore at the Monsters of Rock Festival in Donnington in 1984. Moore, touring his “Victims of the Future” album, captivated Joe with his performance of “Parisienne Walkways” despite claiming he would never play the song again. This event sparked Joe’s dedication to practicing guitar intensely, shaping his musical aspirations.

A significant influence on Joe’s musical journey was Rory Gallagher, whom he witnessed perform in 1983 at Punchestown Racecourse. Seeing Gallagher ignited a passion in Joe, defining his musical path toward raw, intense rock ‘n’ roll. Describing Gallagher’s performance as electrifying, Joe admired the sincerity and realness of Gallagher’s untamed stage presence. These encounters with Moore and Gallagher laid the foundation for Joe’s musical aspirations and dedication to his craft.

Despite his deep-rooted musical influences, Joe pursued his career in London but distanced himself from the industry’s flashy party scene. Rejecting the pretentiousness of the London music industry in the early ’90s, Joe found solace in the company of his local friends over industry professionals. Immersing himself in the genuine camaraderie of his mates, who were plumbers and chippies, Joe valued authenticity over pretense in his musical journey.

Reflecting on his past, Joe recalls seeing Gary Moore once again during the Still Got The Blues tour in 1990 at Hammersmith Odeon, labeling it as the best gig he ever attended. Moore’s influence, alongside that of Rory Gallagher, shaped Joe’s musical identity and dedication to his craft. With his upcoming album, Fields of Redemption, Joe returns to his roots in Ireland, finding love and tranquility in his homeland. This journey back to Irish soil symbolizes a full circle for Joe, reconnecting with his beginnings and the musical influences that ignited his passion.

Through his dedication to music, Joe Hodgson embodies the essence of staying true to oneself amidst the changing tides of the industry. His journey from London back to his homeland underscores the importance of authenticity and genuine connections in pursuing one’s passion. As Joe prepares to release his new album, his story serves as a testament to the enduring power of music and the profound impact of influential artists on aspiring musicians.
