Punk rock band PUP hits the mark on Bullseye with Jesse Thorn
The evolution of the punk rock band’s journey to success has undergone significant changes over time. In the past, approximately two decades ago, before the emergence of platforms like Soundcloud, Bandcamp, and TikTok, forming a punk band typically involved a group of friends from school coming together to create music. This process usually started with practice sessions, recording tracks, and performing at local parties and shows. Subsequently, bands would hit the road, touring wherever they could book a gig. This cycle would repeat until the band either caught the attention of a record label or decided to call it quits.
PUP stands out as one of the few punk bands that have adhered to this traditional approach. Originating in Toronto about fifteen years ago, PUP’s name is derived from the acronym “Pathetic Use of Potential.” The band dedicated themselves to the grind of recording music and touring relentlessly until their efforts finally paid off. PUP has now earned a significant following and acclaim within the music industry, having graced stages at events like the Vans Warped Tour, Lollapalooza, and Reading. Recently, they had the honor of supporting Sum 41 on their farewell tour.
Earlier this year, PUP unveiled their fifth studio album, “Who Will Look After the Dogs?” which is currently available for purchase or streaming. Accompanied by a worldwide tour, including stops across the United States, the band consisting of lead singer Stefan Babcock and guitarist Steve Sladkowski joined the conversation about their latest record. They shared insights into their live performances, shedding light on the dynamic atmosphere of mosh pits at their shows and more.
Diving into the essence of PUP’s music, their dedication to the art of punk rock shines through in their sound and electrifying stage presence. Despite the changing landscape of the music industry, PUP has remained steadfast in their commitment to authenticity and hard work. The band’s journey serves as a testament to the power of perseverance and passion in the pursuit of one’s artistic vision.
As music enthusiasts embrace PUP’s latest album and eagerly anticipate their performances on tour, the band’s infectious energy and raw talent continue to captivate audiences worldwide. Through their unwavering determination and unwavering dedication, PUP has solidified their place in the punk rock scene, embodying the spirit of rebellion and artistic freedom that defines the genre.
