Wolfgang Van Halen is gearing up for the release of his upcoming album, and fans are buzzing with speculation as to whether his new single, ‘I Really Wanna,’ takes a shot at David Lee Roth. Wolfgang, widely recognized as the son of the iconic guitarist Eddie Van Halen, has been establishing his solo career following his father’s passing in 2020. Although Wolfgang had been collaborating with his father on music since the late 2000s, it wasn’t until the debut of Mammoth WVH that fans truly witnessed his individual musical prowess, now rebranding himself as Mammoth.

While Wolfgang and Roth collaborated during the band’s comeback tours and the release of their final album, ‘A Different Kind of Truth,’ their working relationship has soured over time. Wolfgang had previously mentioned Roth’s reluctance to have their reunion album available on streaming platforms, and recently, Roth has spoken candidly about the strained dynamic between him and Eddie’s son.

In 2024, Roth dropped a track titled ‘This Crazy Kid,’ featuring a spoken-word dialogue with ‘Jesus Christ.’ Within this conversation, Roth airs his grievances about Wolfgang, labeling him as “this kid” who allegedly interfered with his female companions during a performance of ‘Ice Cream Man’ on their reunion tour. Since then, Wolfgang has kept mum about Roth, but his latest music video for ‘I Really Wanna’ seems to portray Roth in a negative light, depicting him as a reckless rockstar.

While maintaining the trend seen in Mammoth videos with Wolfgang showcasing his musical skills in every instrument, the video subtly mocks Roth with a caricature interspersed throughout. Though Wolfgang hasn’t directly addressed the speculation, viewers have noted his exaggerated persona in the background, potentially taking a dig at Roth. Notably, he quotes Roth directly in the lyrics, referring to the protagonist as “this kid,” hinting at possible animosity.

Furthermore, the video incorporates elements of Roth’s onstage mannerisms, with Wolfgang mimicking his signature sword tricks and tapping solos, even flipping off the camera with his strumming hand. The song’s lyrics also seem to target Roth, as the chorus bluntly states, “I really wanna mess with you.” While the track may appear to be throwing shade at Roth, former Van Halen vocalist Sammy Hagar has expressed nothing but admiration for Wolfgang in recent years, acknowledging their reconnection during a tribute event and reminiscing about Eddie.

As of now, Roth has not publicly responded to the video or its implications. The ongoing tension between Wolfgang and Roth continues to fuel speculation among fans and music enthusiasts alike. The dynamic between the two musicians remains uncertain, leaving listeners curious about the underlying dynamics within the rock world.
