Sewell, who has shared the stage with Lloyd in various setups, effortlessly blends with the wide-ranging musicanship of Lloyd and Moran. A classically trained pianist and jazz guitarist, Sewell’s mastery of bottleneck Delta blues resonates deeply. “Marvin possesses an authentic voice,” Lloyd comments, noting how Sewell’s performance can transport him back to his musical origins in Memphis. “Marvin’s upbringing in Chicago with familial ties to the Mississippi Delta gives him firsthand knowledge of the trials and tribulations we faced on the fields of the South. This experience is evident in his playing.”

Lloyd has made defining contributions throughout his career in nontraditional trio formations, including his work in Sangam with Hussain and the recent pieces compiled in the Trio of Trios trilogy. However, Figure In Blue breaks new ground in harmony, patience, and generosity, showcasing Lloyd’s reverence shining through his music.
