Two men apprehended following death of disgraced rock star Ian Watkins in prison assault
Two individuals have been taken into custody on suspicion of murder following the tragic death of former Lostprophets lead singer Ian Watkins at HMP Wakefield. Watkins, who was serving a lengthy 29-year sentence for heinous child sex offenses, was the victim of a fatal knife attack on Saturday morning. Despite the prompt arrival of emergency services at the West Yorkshire prison, Watkins succumbed to his injuries on the scene. The two arrested individuals, aged 25 and 43, are currently under police surveillance.
In response to the distressing incident, the prison immediately implemented a lockdown. West Yorkshire Police spokesperson confirmed that a murder investigation has been initiated following the death within the prison walls. The official statement issued by the police indicated that a 48-year-old male was found with grave injuries and tragically could not be saved despite receiving medical treatment. The spokesperson further declared that ongoing inquiries are being conducted by the Homicide and Major Enquiry Team.
The now-deceased Watkins, aged 48, had been sentenced in December 2013 to a substantial 29-year imprisonment term, supplemented by an additional six years on license, subsequent to his confession of multiple sexual offenses, one of which involved the attempted rape of an infant. His arrest transpired after authorities executed a search warrant at his residence in Pontypridd in 2012, leading to the seizure of numerous electronic devices that unveiled his criminal behavior.
This is not the first time Watkins faced violence within the prison walls. In 2023, he was hospitalized following an attack, although his injuries were not deemed life-threatening at the time. Sources shared that he had been held captive by three fellow inmates. Additionally, Watkins faced further consequences in 2019 when he received an additional ten-month sentence for possessing a mobile phone in prison. He claimed that he was coerced by two prisoners to hold onto the device to use his fan mail as a means of financial gain, refraining from identifying the perpetrators out of fear, depicting them as dangerous offenders.
During a trial in Leeds Crown Court, Watkins revealed details of the events leading up to his possession of the phone. He emphasized the menacing environment within the prison, encompassing individuals convicted of severe crimes like murder, sexual assault, and other atrocities, indicating his reluctance to defy them. Despite his solemn testimony, Watkins lost his appeal against reducing his lengthy prison sentence, with the Court of Appeal affirming the significance of his appalling crimes against children.
Among the disturbing evidence outlined during his trial was his despicable act of trying to rape an infant, as well as coercing a fan to harm her child while they engaged in a webcam chat. Watkins received consecutive prison terms of 14 and 15 years for specific criminal activities involving minors. His reprehensible actions led to a cumulative 29-year imprisonment, with the Court of Appeal unequivocally dismissing any possibility for a reduction due to the severity of his offenses and the necessity for a stringent punishment.
