Birmingham is gearing up for its upcoming Day of the Dead festival, also known as Día de los Muertos, which draws inspiration from Mexican traditions to honor and celebrate passed loved ones. While the event carries a solemn undertone, it is also a festive occasion that conveys love and respect for departed family and friends.

Here are six exciting ways to partake in the celebration in Birmingham:

1. Día de los Muertos—Bare Hands Inc.
Bare Hands, Inc. invites everyone to celebrate life at Día de los Muertos Número 23 at Sloss Furnaces. This event, one of the biggest and most intricate Day of the Dead celebrations in the South, offers an array of attractions, including art installations, food trucks, live music performances, a parade procession with puppets, homemade altars (ofrendas), and kids activities. It promises a vibrant and community-focused experience that the whole family can enjoy. The event will take place at Sloss Furnaces on November 2 from 1-9PM, with ticket prices set at $15 in advance, $20 at the gate and online starting November 2, and free admission for children 12 and under.

2. Festival Día de los Muertos Montevallo
The Día de los Muertos Montevallo Festival will feature a colorful celebration replete with traditional food, lively music, and captivating altars adorned with vibrant colors. This family-friendly event offers cultural activities in a joyous atmosphere where the community gathers to pay homage to loved ones and craft lasting memories. It is a night filled with love, laughter, and spirited traditions set to take place at Orr Park—Pecan Grove on Saturday, November 1 from 4PM to 10PM, with free admission for all.

3. Día de los Muertos party with SSMC
Join the post-Halloween festivities at the clubhouse and celebrate Día de los Muertos with style! The event promises a good time with punch cards, cold beverages, and great company, all while supporting SSMC. This not-to-be-missed celebration is happening at 260A Regency Park, Alabaster, AL on Saturday, November 1 at 9PM, with free admission for attendees.

4. Día de los Muertos @ Social Taco
Prepare to partake in Social Taco’s Day of the Dead event at SoHo Homewood, featuring delectable food, lively music, refreshing margaritas, and more. The event caters to lost friends and family members and is open for all to join the celebration. Scheduled for Saturday, November 1 from 3-6PM at 1830 29th Ave, Homewood, AL 35209, this event offers free admission for all attendees.

5. Día de los Muertos @ Mayawell Bar
Celebrate Día de los Muertos at Maywell Bar with music, drinks, and good company. Attendees can enjoy flowing drinks while listening to a live DJ set by @brothersfromrio. The exquisitely arranged ofrenda is a sight to behold and a place to pay respects. The event will take place at 2900 4th Ave S, Birmingham, AL 35233 on Saturday, November 1 from 7-11PM, with free admission for all.

6. Celebrate Día de los Muertos + 3 Years of Adiõs
Join founders José Medina Camacho and Jesús Méndez at Adiõs to celebrate Día de los Muertos and the third anniversary of the establishment. Attendees can gather around the team’s permanent ofrenda, which pays tribute to memory and tradition year-round, and partake in two days of festivities featuring DJs on both Saturday and Sunday, along with birthday cake and giveaways on Sunday. Additionally, on Sunday, November 2, Nightshade will be serving up delicious flat-top brisket sandwiches outside Adiõs at 4 PM. This unique celebration is one not to be missed and will take place at 2218 1st Ave N Suite 100, Birmingham, AL 35203 from Saturday, November 1 to Sunday, November 2, with free admission for all.
