Bright Star Restaurant in Bessemer, Alabama, recently received an award from the Southern Foodways Alliance (SFA) in recognition of its significant impact on Southern food culture. Alongside Bright Star, two other Alabama establishments were also honored by the SFA for their contributions to Southern food trends.

Nick Koikos, the current owner of Bright Star in Birmingham, was acknowledged with the Lifetime Achievement Award from the SFA this year. Established in 1907 as a small bar with only 12 seats, Bright Star has a long history of serving traditional “meat and three” lunches to locals working in the coal, iron ore, and steel industries. The Koikos family has been involved with the restaurant since 1925, when Greek immigrant Tom Bonduris’ cousins, Peter and Bill Koikos, acquired an interest in the business. Nick’s father, Bill, eventually bought out Peter, and both of Bill’s sons, Jimmy and Nick, became actively involved in the restaurant. Nick, the current owner, received the SFA award in honor of his dedication to the restaurant’s success.

Pam Trowbridge, the fourth-generation manager of Trowbridge’s Ice Cream and Sandwich Bar in Florence, was recognized with the Keeper of the Flame award by the SFA. Founded in 1917 by Paul Trowbridge, this establishment is famous for its orange pineapple ice cream and delightful food offerings such as hot dogs, chili, and sandwiches. Pam continues the legacy of her family by managing the business, attracting visitors from all over.

Erin and Erica Washington, the founders of FreshGreens Market and Farm in Montgomery, were awarded the John Egerton Prize by the SFA. This market, which also operates as an urban farm, aims to promote health and wellness through fresh, nutritious produce. Inspired by the legacy of their great-grandfather, who owned a grocery store in the same location in the 1940s, the Washington sisters strive to make healthy food easily accessible to all members of the community. In addition to running the market, they provide education to help community members learn how to grow their own food and live healthier lives.

Overall, Alabama shone brightly at the SFA awards this year, showcasing the rich culinary diversity and heritage of the Southern food scene. The recipients from Bright Star, Trowbridge’s, and FreshGreens Market were honored for their exceptional contributions to preserving and advancing Southern food culture.
