The Los Alamos County community is witnessing a wave of uncertainty brought about by the current federal government shutdown, the escalation of food prices, and other economic pressures. Responding to this urgent need, the Los Alamos County Social Services Division has united with LA Cares, Self-Help, Trinity on the Hill, Los Alamos MainStreet, and other community partners to inaugurate the ‘I Can Help’ program. This joint effort aims to distribute emergency food meal kits and facilitate donations to aid those experiencing hardships. The program will commence on November 7, 2025, across designated locations in the County.

Jessica Strong, Social Services Manager, underscored the essence of community unity in Los Alamos, stating, “this program shines a light on the community’s spirit of assisting each other in times of need, even the smallest contributions can have a significant impact on families facing challenges.” The ‘I Can Help’ initiative encourages community involvement through various means.

Residents are urged to provide financial donations to bolster local nonprofits offering emergency assistance, such as LA Cares and Self-Help, Inc. Those interested in contributing food can do so by donating specific items as part of the meal kits assembly process. The nine essential food items can be dropped off at specified locations between October 30 and November 6 to ensure efficient distribution by volunteers on November 7. The drop-off locations include diverse spots in Los Alamos and White Rock.

Furthermore, residents wishing to donate pantry essentials, hygiene products, or pet food can make contributions at designated locations throughout the County. A network of collection boxes is available at Smith’s Food & Drug and other community pantries, making it convenient for people to extend their support beyond financial donations.

For individuals seeking assistance, emergency meal kits will be available starting November 7, 2025, at various pick-up locations. No identification or proof of need is necessary to obtain these meal kits. The distribution points are spread across multiple sites in Los Alamos and White Rock, ensuring easier access for those in need.

In case of further requirements, community members can reach out to LA Cares or Los Alamos County Social Services for additional assistance or information. The ‘I Can Help’ program stands as a testament to the unity and compassion of the Los Alamos community, showcasing the strength that collective action can bring in supporting those facing difficult times.
