Xania Monet has made history by becoming the first AI-generated artist to achieve recognition on the US Billboard rankings, marking a significant moment in the ongoing intersection of artificial intelligence and the music industry. The AI project secured enough radio airplay to debut at No. 30 on the Adult R&B Airplay chart, with Monet’s single ‘How Was I Supposed to Know?’ scaling to No. 1 on the R&B Digital Song Sales chart. Following its release, the track made appearances in various Billboard categories such as Hot Gospel Songs, Hot R&B Songs, and Emerging Artists, indicating a novel phase in the interaction between AI-generated music and established charts.

Monet is characterized on Apple Music as a “contemporary R&B vocalist,” however, beneath the surface lies Telisha “Nikki” Jones, a poet and designer from Mississippi who employs generative software to transform her poetry into musical compositions. Jones reportedly inked a lucrative record deal with Hallwood Media in September after a competitive bid from various record labels, highlighting the burgeoning interest in AI-infused music within the industry.

Not every artist in the industry is embracing this development wholeheartedly. R&B musician Kehlani expressed her dismay on TikTok, labeling the ascent of AI in music as “so beyond out of our control” and cautioning against the replication of copyrighted material without giving credit to the original artists who served as inspiration. As artificial intelligence continues to redefine the landscape of creativity, the success of Monet on the charts sparks fresh inquiries about ownership, artistic expression, and the essence of music creation in the year 2025.
