Twelve Questions with ROBERT DEEBLE in November 2025
Robert Deeble’s seventh album, titled The Space Between Us, offers listeners a rich and emotionally charged collection of songs that delve into deep literary themes. Produced by Ric Hordinski at The Monastery Studio in Cincinnati, Ohio, the album was released to various platforms on February 6, 2026, under Deeble’s Mind Bomb Publishing label. The album rollout was strategically divided into three phases, starting with a private stream for crowdfunding supporters in March, followed by physical copies and downloads in the Summer. An exclusive Bandcamp pre-release in August offered vinyl, CD, and digital downloads before the album’s wide streaming release in February. Robert also created Dolby Atmos tracks exclusively for the streaming phase, providing listeners with immersive audio experiences.
Growing up in Long Beach, California, Robert honed his songwriting craft in the local underground music scene, forming lasting partnerships with notable musicians like drummer Stephen Hodges and folk artist Victoria Williams. Each song on the album draws inspiration from literary works, such as Ray Bradbury’s Fahrenheit 451, Peter Wohlleben’s The Hidden Life of Trees, and The Carter Family: Don’t Forget This Song, among others. By infusing literary references into his music, Robert offers fans a multi-layered listening experience, revealing hidden nuggets that may not be immediately apparent on first or second listen.
Robert’s musical journey began with a visual memory of watching the Yellow Submarine movie as a child, sparking his interest in music and leading him to pursue drumming as his first instrument. While the Beatles served as his entry point into music, pivotal albums like Revolver and The White Album, along with artists like Bob Dylan, Nick Drake, and Leonard Cohen, guided his evolving musical taste. Drawing influence from these diverse sources, Robert crafted a signature sound that blends melancholic, reflective songwriting with rich storytelling and emotional depth.
Throughout his career, Robert has collaborated with a range of talented artists, including Stephen Hodges, Victoria Williams, Rachel Blumberg, and Tomo Nakayama, among others. For his latest album, The Space Between Us, Robert teamed up with producer Ric Hordinski, whose innovative approach elevated the music to new heights. Ric’s use of backing vocals as instruments, particularly on tracks like “The Attic of Desire,” showcases his artistic vision and creative input on the project.
Outside the studio and away from touring, Robert enjoys exploring thrift stores and consignment markets, hunting for hidden gems and forgotten treasures that he can repurpose. His love for vintage paperback books from the 50s reflects his appreciation for artistry and design, drawing inspiration from eras like the Saul Bass illustration period. Embracing an eclectic mix of influences and inspirations, Robert’s music defies easy categorization, challenging preconceived notions of folk and singer-songwriter genres.
Despite being labeled as a folk or acoustic artist, Robert’s music transcends traditional boundaries, offering a poignant and introspective listening experience. While comparisons to iconic artists like Nick Drake and Leonard Cohen have been drawn, Robert’s unique style and approach set him apart, crafting music that resonates with authenticity and emotional depth. In his downtime with the band, Robert takes on the role of drinks distributor, while lamenting the lack of culinary skills among the group. Starstruck only on rare occasions, Robert recalls being in awe of meeting Suzanne Vega after one of her shows, highlighting his genuine admiration for fellow musicians.
