AC/DC and Amyl & The Sniffers to perform at MCG in Melbourne
In the past few weeks, Melbourne has been a hotspot for stadium rock concerts. First, the Oasis rocked the stage, followed by Metallica at Marvel Stadium paying tribute to The Living End. Now, thousands of heavy rock fans gathered at the iconic MCG in Melbourne to welcome back Australia’s legendary rock band, AC/DC.
The city of Melbourne has a special place in the hearts of AC/DC fans. It is where, in 1976, the band, led by Bon Scott and his bagpipes, performed on the back of a truck while filming their iconic music video for “It’s a Long Way To the Top.” The city also witnessed a re-enactment of that day in 2010 when thousands marched to the song in protest against the impact of liquor licensing laws on live music venues. Just recently, fans gathered at Federation Square to witness a world record-breaking attempt for the most pipers playing at once, with “It’s a Long Way To the Top” setting the tone for the event.
For many fans, like myself, witnessing AC/DC live has been a lifelong journey. I recall my first concert at Fawkner High School in 1975 and the excitement of seeing them perform in local halls and even an ice skating rink before they became the rock legends they are today. The anticipation for this PWR UP tour in 2025 was palpable, especially with a lineup featuring The Casanovas, Amyl & The Sniffers, and of course, AC/DC at the iconic MCG.
As The Casanovas kicked off the night, the energy in the stadium was high despite the crowd still trickling in. With members like Tommy Boyce and Dave Larkin leading the charge, they delivered electrifying performances of their classic hits, setting the stage for the legendary AC/DC. Amyl & The Sniffers, known for their relentless touring schedule, brought their A-game to the stage, starting with an explosive rendition of “Security.” Amy Taylor’s boundless energy and punk rock spirit captivated the audience, solidifying their status as rock icons. The band’s performance, including tracks like “Balaclava Lover Boogie” and “Jerkin’,” left an indelible mark on the ecstatic crowd.
Overall, the night was a celebration of rock music at its finest, with local and global artists coming together to pay homage to the enduring legacy of AC/DC. From the electrifying performances to the palpable energy in the crowd, it was a night that truly captured the essence of stadium rock in Melbourne. As the final notes rang out and the crowd roared with applause, it was evident that AC/DC’s music continues to resonate with fans, both old and new, across generations.
