An artificial intelligence-generated country track has achieved the top position on a US Billboard singles chart. The track titled ‘Walk My Walk’, produced by the AI artist Breaking Rust, has taken over the number one spot on Billboard’s Country Digital Songs sales chart. It has amassed over three million streams on Spotify in less than a month, reflecting its massive popularity among listeners.

Additionally, ‘Walk My Walk’ has also claimed the top spot on Spotify’s ‘Viral 50’ chart in the US, solidifying its widespread appeal. Breaking Rust’s other track, ‘Livin’ on Borrowed Time’, has reached the fifth position on the same chart with more than four million streams on the platform. Despite the creator of Breaking Rust keeping their identity under wraps, an official TikTok page dedicated to them has gained nearly 200,000 followers. Furthermore, ‘Walk My Walk’ has been featured in over 150,000 videos on the TikTok platform, demonstrating its virality and reach.

The phenomenon of AI-generated artists achieving substantial streaming figures has been on the rise. The success of an AI-generated ‘band’ called The Velvet Sundown earlier this year, accruing approximately 400,000 monthly Spotify listeners within a short period, sparked attention. However, it was later revealed that the ‘spokesperson’ behind the project confessed to orchestrating a hoax targeted at the media to create buzz and garner attention.

Similarly, the AI-generated artist Xania Monet has made headlines for securing a multimillion-dollar record deal and becoming the first AI artist to rank on the US Billboard charts. Xania Monet’s creator, Telisha “Nikki” Jones, a Mississippi poet and designer, has defended the project, emphasizing that she perceives Monet as a real entity. Despite facing criticism and controversy surrounding AI-generated music, Jones remains steadfast in her support of Monet, acknowledging the disruptive nature of innovation in challenging conventional norms.

Various musicians, including Kehlani, Mac DeMarco, SZA, and ABBA’s Björn Ulvaeus, have expressed skepticism and apprehension regarding AI’s increasing role in the music industry. The issue of AI-generated music encroaching on human artists’ territory has stirred debates and prompted concerns about the authenticity and future of creative expression in the music landscape. As audiences struggle to distinguish between AI-generated and human music, the introduction of AI in music production could potentially lead to the proliferation of generic, low-quality content, according to a recent study.

Given the evolving landscape of AI technology in music, platforms like Spotify are adopting stringent measures to safeguard artists’ rights and combat AI-generated content abuse. Recent efforts by Spotify to eliminate spammy tracks and impersonators signal a proactive approach to addressing the challenges posed by AI in the music industry. Musicians and industry stakeholders continue to advocate for stronger protections and regulations to ensure fair compensation and recognition for artists in an era dominated by technological advancements.
