Arriving on the scene with a bang, Australian songstress Cassidy Paris found herself aligning with brothers Tom and Alex Rogowski, formerly of the Welsh band Mad Haven, at Webfest 2022. This collaboration led to the two brothers relocating to Melbourne and officially joining forces with Paris, marking the beginning of a musical partnership.

“Bittersweet” marks Paris’s second endeavor with Frontiers Music, following her successful debut album “New Sensation.” This second album not only solidifies her relationship with the label but also exemplifies the growth and evolution of her artistry. Guided by industry veteran Paul Laine, known for his work with Danger Danger, Defiants, and Darkhorse, Paris honed her skills and released two EPs under his mentorship. These EPs served as the entry point that ultimately brought her to the attention of Frontiers Music.

Working alongside Steve Brown, Paris takes a step further in her musical journey, delving into songwriting for her latest album. The advice she’s received emphasizes the importance of presentation without compromising substance. However, the teaser trailer for ‘Nothing Left To Lose’ may miss the mark if interpreted literally, displaying Paris in a manner not aligned with the third wave of feminism.

The album kicks off with ‘Finish What We Started’ and ‘Can’t Let Go,’ tracks that bear the mark of Paul Laine’s influence, drawing on the country rock tones reminiscent of his Dark Horse era. These tracks stand out as strong contenders, perfectly aligning with Paris’s vocal style. Straying away from the eighties AOR sound that initially defined her, Paris showcases growth and maturity in her music, retaining only the best elements.

‘Undecided’ and ‘Sucker For Your Love’ lead a series of tracks that encapsulate Paris’s musical versatility. ‘Undecided’ radiates feelgood energy, propelled by lively guitar work, while ‘Sucker For Your Love’ takes a direct route to mainstream accessibility. ‘Anybody There’ follows suit with a balanced approach, hinting at the album’s momentum.

Despite shedding her earlier musical conventions, Paris maintains a sense of urgency and drive in her music, a hallmark of melodic rock. The album sets the stage for Paris’s continued growth and success, earning her a solid ***1/2 rating from reviewer Brian McGowan.

With a newfound musical direction and a blend of influences, Cassidy Paris’s “Bittersweet” offers listeners a glimpse into the artist’s evolving musical landscape. Departing from familiar sounds, Paris’s latest album promises a fresh and engaging listening experience that sets the stage for what’s yet to come from this emerging talent.
