Members of Rivers of Nihil collaborate on a new project, creating a dismal experience
New Miserable Experience is thrilled to announce their upcoming album, “Gild The Lily,” set to be released on January 23 via Pelagic Records. The band, which includes members from Rivers of Nihil, Rosetta, ex-Revocation, Model Prisoner, and more, provides a fresh take on heavy music, merging it with alternative synth-rock to create expansive and melodic songs.
Their latest single, “Ordinary People,” offers a glimpse into the forthcoming album. This infectious and evocative track is a response to privileged individuals trying to portray themselves as average while discrediting empathy as a negative quality. The song captures the band’s distinctive energy and rich tones, reflecting a mix of tension and melancholy that is sure to captivate listeners.
New Miserable Experience, based in Philadelphia, initially began as a collaborative effort between vocalist/bassist David Grossman and multi-instrumentalist Joshua Mahesh Kost. Over time, the project evolved into a full-fledged band, adding talented musicians like Rosetta drummer Bruce “B.J.” McMurtrie Jr., ex-Revocation bassist Brett Bamberger, and Rivers of Nihil guitarist Brody Uttley. Each member contributes a unique musical signature, collectively crafting songs focused on emotional depth and intricate instrumentation.
Their third album, “Gild The Lily,” features 12 meticulously arranged tracks that diverge from the bombastic tendencies of their previous work. Instead, the band prioritizes clear melodies, precise dynamics, and textured production, constructing a more nuanced and emotionally resonant listening experience. By concentrating on subtle gestures and thoughtful arrangements, New Miserable Experience emphasizes craftsmanship over showmanship, creating a musical journey that rewards attentive listeners.
The album seamlessly merges elements of alternative synth rock with chorus-laden guitars and a dynamic rhythm section, ranging from propulsive beats to spacious, reverb-soaked sounds. Drawing inspiration from acclaimed artists like Crosses, Ulver, and The Black Queen, New Miserable Experience delivers a distinct sonic blend that is both familiar and refreshing.
With tracks like “Heartsick,” “The Devil We Know,” and “Perfect Blue,” “Gild The Lily” promises to be a captivating and immersive listening experience. As the band members, Josh Kost, Brody Uttley, Brett Bamberger, David Grossman, and BJ McMurtrie, showcase their musical prowess, they invite listeners to embark on a sonic journey that balances raw emotion, intricate instrumentation, and meticulous craftsmanship.
