Billy Childish, a prominent figure in the underground UK garage rock scene, assembled Thee Headcoatees back in 1991, a time when the term “UK garage” held a different significance. This project embodied a do-it-yourself punk approach to the traditional girl-group model, with Childish envisioning Thee Headcoatees as a female counterpart to his own band, Thee Headcoats. Despite this original intention, the band’s vibrant and distinctive sound established them as a unique entity. Following their disbandment in 1999, leader Holly Golightly pursued a successful solo career, highlighted by memorable collaborations like “It’s True That We Love One Another,” a whimsical duet featured on White Stripes’ Elephant. Unexpectedly, Thee Headcoatees have made a comeback.

The revival of Thee Headcoatees comes on the heels of Thee Headcoats’ return, a development that initially escaped notice. In 2023, Billy Childish orchestrated the reunion of Thee Headcoats, culminating in the release of their first album since 2000, Irregularis (The Great Hiatus). The recent release of Man-Trap marks Thee Headcoatees’ reemergence, marking their first album release since 1999’s Here Comes Cessation. Backed by Thee Headcoats and produced once again by Childish, Man-Trap encapsulates the timeless allure of raw, budget-friendly rock ‘n’ roll. The album features a range of covers from esteemed bands like the Ramones and the Rolling Stones, in addition to a collection of fresh, original tracks.

Man-Trap is now available through Damaged Goods, offering listeners a glimpse into Thee Headcoatees’ renewed musical journey.
