Mac DeMarco has built a reputation as one of the most beloved musicians of his generation by sticking to a unique career strategy. Instead of opting for a major-label deal or spending time in high-end studios, he chooses to record his music in unconventional locations like his house or hotel rooms and releases his songs on the label he launched himself. This approach gives him a level of autonomy over his music that allows him to experiment and get creative with how he promotes his work.

Currently, it seems that Mac DeMarco is gearing up to release a new album titled Dog On The Rock, marking his second LP of the year. Interestingly, there have been no official press releases about the album. Rather than conventional methods of promotion, DeMarco has been distributing CD-Rs of the album to fans during his European tour. A Redditor mentioned acquiring a copy that had been taped to the barricade at a recent Dublin show. In an interview from the Arte Concert Festival in Paris, DeMarco briefly touched on the new project, initially referring to it as “Mac’s Secret Album.” He shared, “I actually do have some a bunch of recordings that I made in between these two tours, and I went to the print shop to make little album sleeves of that yesterday. So maybe there will be another secret album, but one that you can hear this time.”

Surprisingly, fans have managed to upload the once-secret Dog On The Rock album to YouTube. The album consists of about 40 minutes of untitled tracks, described by Scott as “demo-quality, guitar, and nonsense vocalizations, but pretty pleasant.” The Mac’s Record Label Instagram account also shared a snippet of the music on their stories, indicating that they are open to these tunes being accessible to the public.

Although DeMarco’s European tour has ended, he will soon be hitting the road again. Fans can look forward to catching him at various Canadian venues next month, including Halifax, Moncton, Montreal, Toronto, Winnipeg, Saskatoon, Edmonton, Calgary, and Victoria. By maintaining his independence and pushing the boundaries of conventional music promotion, Mac DeMarco continues to captivate audiences and solidify his place as a celebrated figure in the indie rock scene.
