Former employees of Rockstar Games were terminated last month for sharing internal company messages on a private Discord server, according to a recent report. The termination of 34 staff members was allegedly due to “gross misconduct”, although specific details have not been officially disclosed. The Independent Workers’ Union of Great Britain (IWGB) has accused Rockstar of union-busting and has initiated a legal claim asserting the unfair dismissal of employees.

The controversy is rooted in a Discord server that was established in 2022 and was exclusive to Rockstar employees and union representatives. Access to certain channels within the server was restricted to paying union members only. The conversations primarily revolved around salary discussions, bonuses, and other human resources-related topics protected under the Equality Act of 2010.

Despite the server not containing sensitive game-related information, the employees’ dismissal seemed to stem from the discussion of changes to internal Slack policies. An incident involving the sharing of details about the policy changes, which occurred after working hours, led to discussions within the Discord server. The source of the leaked information speculated that a server member brought this to the attention of Rockstar management, sparking an internal investigation. The timing of the dismissals aligns with the timeline of the messages shared on the server.

The revised Slack policies included the removal of non-work related chat channels, which were considered distractions. Employees found these changes unpopular and expressed their disapproval on the Discord server. Actions like using emojis to show support for causes or reacting with emojis to industry news were no longer allowed under the new policies. The IWGB president, Alex Marshall, criticized Rockstar for hindering communication among workers who were simply trying to discuss and improve their working conditions to deliver successful games.

In response to the investigation by People Make Games, Rockstar has chosen not to comment on the matter. In addition to the legal challenge initiated by the IWGB, more than 200 employees at Rockstar have signed a letter condemning the dismissal of their colleagues. The dismissal of the employees was raised in the UK Parliament, bringing further attention to the issue.

The use of private servers and internal communication channels in the workspace has become a subject of increasing scrutiny, especially in cases where employees are terminated for discussions considered as misconduct. The balancing act between protecting company information and allowing employees to engage in discourse about their working conditions remains contentious in the modern workplace environment.
